Tu?owice Semi-Vitreous China Factory

Detailed description:

The Schlegelmilch China Factory in Tu?owice was the most famous enterprise from that area, even outside Germany. At the time when the staff was nearly 800 workers, it was the biggest production plant in the Niemodli?ski District. As early as in 1800 Count Johann Carl Praschma founded in Tu?owice a factory producing ceramics, where also vessels of black porcelain were made. The plant was expanded by Count Frankenberg-Ludwigsdof who leased it for a long time. In 1905, the plant was purchased by the Schlegelmilch family. Later on, it was demolished and tenement houses for employees of the new china factory were built in its place.
In 1889, Erhard Schlegelmilch from Suhl in Thuringia built a new china factory next to the railway station in Tu?owice. Apart from normal vessels, it also used to manufacture thin-walled porcelain ware. Until World War II, the factory enjoyed great recognition. After the end of the war it was taken over by Poland and the production was restarted. A new brand appeared - “Ceramika Tu?owice”. Special attention should be paid to the porter’s lodge and the administration building, as well as the post-production buildings of the 19th and 20th century. The two villas of the former owners of the factory are also worth seeing.
