”The Night of the Water Demon” is a biannual regional event, held at the Municipal Centre of Culture since 2001. It takes place in the form of presentation of Silesian legends and fairy tales by old people and classical music concerts during a picnic. The Water Demon is a very common character in the Odra River Valley. It is an evil spirit inhabiting water, identified with the Aquarius in Upper Silesian and Cieszyn Silesian fairy tales, legends, beliefs and anecdotes. Tales about the Water Demon form part of Silesian folklore. The Water Demon was supposed to haunt marshes, rivers, lakes and ponds. The belief in water demons (just like aquariuses) was so deeply rooted that it found its reflection in Christian folklore. Christianity even took to popularising its own means of protection against the evil spirits – it was rumoured e.g. that anyone who was drowning should have a rosary put round his neck, as this warded off the Water Demon. In chronicles from the 14th century the following excerpt can be found: Take good heed when you are by the waterside to avoid the Water Demon well in time. You will know it at once, as its ugliness has no compare, nor does it bear any semblance to any human being. And when you see this aqueous monster with a huge green-haired head and stick-like legs – run for your life, man, to escape sure death in the depths. When you are not wary enough and get caught by the Water Demon, fling a rosary into its eyes, and this will shoo the beast away. During “The Night of the Water Demon” old legends come to life in the form of a combined music, light and drama performance. Each time it is accompanied by numerous fringe events: in 2007 there was an outdoor sculpting session, resulting in the establishment of an open-air museum of the protagonists of Silesian legends
