St. Nicolas Church in Krapkowice
Krapkowice
Late Gothic defensive church. First mentioned in 1330.
The church has a cross ribbed vault in the chancel from the 14th century. Thanks to Piotr Temchin, head of municipality, the building was extended in 1400 by adding the Rosary Chapel in which Temchin was probably buried together with his wife. The low reliefs on the outside wall of the church are made in their liking. Temchin was also responsible for building the first hospital in 1416. It was a shelter for the poor and sick with a hospital chapel which was destroyed in 1550. Between 1534 and 1626 the church was taken over by the Protestants. This was the result of the fact that the line of the Piast dukes came to an end, and the town was given in pledge to Margrave Georg von Jägerdorf who was a fervent Protestant. He added one aisle to the church. In the 16th century, because of an increase in the population of Krapkowice, the church needed to be expanded. It was then that the chancel was added together with the third aisle and a choir on the southern side. The works were funded by the owner of the town Knight Hans von Redern who is buried with his wife and his mother in the church tomb. The tomb slab bears the coat of arms of the von Redern family and a low relief of a woman who was most probably von Redern’s wife. In 1722 there was a great fire in the town which utterly destroyed the church. However, thanks to the efforts of the then parish priest, father Franciszek Major, and numerous donors, it was faithfully recreated. The most valuable movable monuments in the church are the 16th century stone font, Baroque-Classicistic pulpit, 18th century monstrance, chalice and paintings of the Last Supper, St. Anna teaching Mary, and Virgin Mary revealing herself to St. John of Nepomuk. In addition to renovating the church, a school was built and the hospital chapel of St. Adalbert and St. Gregory was reconstructed. The chapel was located by the defensive wall near what was later to become the Opolska gate.
