Sites of Lusatian culture

Detailed description:

Sand and gravel excavation between Malerzowice and Bielice in the ?ambinowice Municipality resulted in spectacular discoveries. In 1992, a dozen or so mammoth tusks were discovered, of which so far only one has been preserved along with mammoth molars. The tusk and teeth are currently exhibited in the Museum of Opole Silesia in Opole. In the area a later settlement of the Lusatian culture was also discovered, consisting of characteristic huts on stilts. In the course of archaeological works attempts were made to reconstruct these structures. The settlement, located on the right-hand bank of the Nysa K?odzka River, specialised in iron smelting, which is confirmed by the biggest primitive smelting furnaces (dymarki) in Poland. In its vicinity, there was also a large cremation burial ground (urns). Now the terrain is partly flooded with water from the former gravel excavations.
