Detailed description:

Jemielnica is the oldest church centre in the Strzelce region. The location of both the buildings in the village and the Cistercian Complex were determined by the existence of fish ponds. The ancient centre of the settlement is a longitudinal rectangular-like square. In the corner of the square a parish church was built in the 15th century by the pond. The centre of the village has a former monastery church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. The church combines elements of the Gothic with those of the Baroque both in its architectural design and in interior decor. Inside it there are rich Baroque decorations as well as a 42 metre nave covered with a homogenous cross ribbed vault, 16 Baroque altars, a pulpit, organs, chandeliers, and paintings including the ones by a well-known Silesian painter Michael Willmann. There are also beautiful sculptures and Rococo organs. The church garden has a Baroque column of St. Adalbert from the 18th century. According to a legend, the Bishop of Prague, Adalbert, delivered a sermon by the pond as early as the 10th century. The Trail of Cistercian Monasteries stretches all across Europe from Portugal to Poland. The capital of the municipality is one of its points. In the region of Silesia, the trail joins the monasteries in Jemielnica, Kamieniec Z?bkowicki, Henryków, Bard, Krzeszów, Lubi??, and Trzebnica. Following the trail in Jemielnica one can visit a complex of Cistercian monasteries with its historic layout, the church in Centawa and other buildings included in the register of the Provincial Conservator of Historical Monuments. The network of Cistercian monasteries: The Cistercian abbey in Jemielnica was the second abbey of that order in the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz (the first one was established in Rudy) In the records from the 14th century the monastery in Jemielnica is referred to as the Duke’s foundation. It was built by the Duke of Opole, Bolko, in 1307 (the abbey already existed in 1289). The property belonging to the abbey included seven and a half villages over half of which were endowed by knights. Villages located in the direct vicinity of Jemielnica (D?brówka, G?siorowice, ?agiewniki, ?aziska, Wierchlesie) became property of the abbey only in the 14th century. By the end of the 17th century the Cistercians from Jemielnica managed to establish farms in all the villages which belonged to the monastery. The existence of the monastery farm and the structure of agricultural production promoted by the order had a huge influence on the way peasants tilled their land. The rural community followed good practices. They grew millet, rye, peas, barley, oat, and hop which was used to produce good quality beer, wine, and vodka. The oldest monastery inn was already open in early Middle Ages. The monastery was also active in areas other than agriculture such as tar and charcoal production and smithery. The Cistercians took over the functioning mill on B?otnica and fish ponds located at the foot of the monastery. The order was dissolved by a decision of the Prussian authorities on November 24 1810 and all of its property was seized by the Prussian state treasury. Today, what remains of the four-sided layout of the buildings with the internal yard measuring 18 x 14 metres and surrounded by galleries are three two-storey sides of simple architecture. Only the eastern side retained the gallery with the sacristy and Medieval stone walls (including the gates) surrounding an area 170 metres long and 100 metres wide.
