Currently, patronal feast days in parishes are associated with their external manifestation, entailing both religious festivities (the patronal feast high mass, church decorating, processions) as well as the accompanying events: fêtes with street stalls selling toys and sweets, etc. In a sense, the celebrations constitute a reference to the origin of this festival. Nevertheless, they often lose their spiritual character. Therefore, sermons preached on that day remind the congregation of the patron saint and of the granting of indulgences. For convenience, liturgical celebrations in honour of the patron saint may be moved from a weekday to the next day off, e.g. the Sunday after the feast day proper.
