Palace park in Tu?owice

Detailed description:

The original area of the palace park in Tu?owice amounted to 4.7 ha. It was founded by Alexander Mohaupt. In 1836, Ernest von Frankenberg brought to his estate Kurt Sallmann from Bad Muskau – a man who was proficient in the art of setting up and tending gardens. Prior to his commencing work, Sallmann carefully examined other parks in famous estates in Silesia. He worked in Tu?owice for twelve years. His work was continued by his son Maximilian. Within one year the area of the park increased to 7.8 ha. Count Frederic von Frankenberg and Sallmann visited European-famous Muskau gardens designed by Edward Petzold. Enchanted by their beauty, they decided to reconstruct it faithfully in Tu?owice, including a selection of identical tree and shrub species. A greenhouse was built, in which grape-vines, pineapples and other tropical fruits were grown. Next to the park alleys, there were garden sculptures. The whole park was surrounded with a wall, within which there were also lawns with colourful flowers. Two life-sized deer guarded the entrance gate to the estate.
In 1903 an important event took place. Tu?owice was visited by researchers from the German Dendrological Association. They admired the beauty of the castle park and its extraordinarily valuable and rare tree specimens. The park was unanimously recognised to be amongst the most beautiful ones they had ever seen. The credit went to Maximilian Sallmann, who retired after forty years of intensive work. As recognition of his accomplishments, Count Frederic von Frankenburg ordered that a “cottage” be built for him in the park.
