Olszynka Forest (Alder Forest)

designation:

G?ogówek/ Rzepcze

short description:

The Olszynka Forest covers over the Eastern side of the proglacial stream valley of the Osoblaha River

detailed description:

The Olszynka Forest covers the Eastern side of the proglacial stream valley of the Osoblaha River. The broad-leaved plantings descend to the valley-side onto the level of wet, peaty mid-forest meadows. The forest is a habitat of valuable flora and fauna specimens. There are 200-year-old specimens of the common oak (Quercus robur ), sometimes forming historic alleys. Among the tree-stand one can found one-hundred-year-old specimens of European hornbeams (Carpinus betulus ), European beeches (Fagus sylvatica ), ash-trees (Fraxinus L.), lindens (Tilia) and sycamores (Acer pseudoplatanus). In the scrub, the hop (Humulus lupulus) may be found – a perennial plant species of the Cannabeceae family, a thermophilous plant originating from Southern Europe. Many trees and the forest substratum are covered with the common ivy (Hedera helix L.), a species of an evergreen creeper belonging in the Araliaceae family. During the mushrooming season, the forest provides mushrooms. There are boleti, bay boleti, butter boleti, honey fungi, umbrella mushrooms and chanterelles. Among the fauna species found in the forest, there is the oak beetle (Cerambyx cerdo), Poland’s biggest insect of the longhorn beetle family (an adult specimen measures up to 56 mm). In the forest, it occurs only on common and sessile oaks. It prefers well sun-lit, over 100 year old trees. There are also numerous species of amphibians, reptiles and birds found. The humid microclimate permeated with the scent of forest and mid-forest peaty meadows has therapeutic effect, in particular on the upper respiratory tract. It has also recreational assets.
