Nature and Landscape Complex – „Pod D?bami” Aleja B?a?kowa

designation:

KOLONOWSKIE

short description:

Near a forest road B?a?kowa (the Haraszowskie Forest Administration Unit, Zawadzkie Forest District Office, Kolonowskie Municipality) there are beautiful tree alleys

detailed description:

Along one of them there are 129 pedunculate oaks and bird cherries aged over 200 and boasting up to 460 cm in trunk circumference and 32 m in height. The other is flanked by 14 pedunculate oaks growing between the B?a?kowa forest road and the Ma?a Panew river (flowing parallel to the two alleys). The latter alley is as old as the former one and proudly displays specimens with trunk circumferences of up to 650 cm and 30 m in height. Both alleys are protected by law as monuments of nature. Until the end of the 18th century the Stobrawskie Woods had remained almost untouched. These woods were different from the ones which cover the Ma?a Panew valley today. They were dense, inaccessible, and deep. One would sooner chance upon a moose or a wolf than a human there. It all changed at the end of the 18th century when Count Philip Colonna decided to develop steelworks in the Ma?a Panew valley. His raw materials were the local deposits of bog iron ore. The woods provided the fuel. Yearly demand for wood used by oxidation furnaces alone reached 80 000 m3 at the end of the 18th century. The wood was not only necessary for the steelworks, but also for the Silesian mines and for the entire booming industry of the Prussian state. It was only natural then that the first to be felled were the strongest oaks, maples, hornbeams, and pines. What used to be a primeval forest was fading away. There are not many signs of it today. One of them is the oak alley along the B?a?kowa forest road in the Haraszkowskie Forest Administration Unit. It boasts almost 130 pedunculate and red oaks reaching 32 m in height and 459 cm in circumference. Even more powerful oaks grow nearby, between B?a?kowa and the Ma?a Panew valley. Their circumference is up to 650 cm.
