The Museum in Praszka was established on the initiative of Prof. Konrad Ja?d?ewski, director of the Archeological and Ethnographic Museum In ?ód?
Professor Ja?d?ewski made available for this purpose a tenement house at 15 Grunwaldzki Square. The opening of the museum was celebrated on 8 May 1980 in the presence of numerous invited guests. Praszka’s museum is a regional institution and operates on the basis of the Act on Museums and of a special statute. Its main task is to gather, catalogue and provide scholarly analysis of various collections and then make them available to the public. In addition, the museum is an academic and educational institution. As such it organises lectures, lessons at the museum and various competitions. The museum’s library collects books and periodicals, mainly those devoted to archeology, ethnography and history. The main emphasis is on literature dealing with the region. The Museum in Praszka is a multi department entity. It includes the following departments: • historical department – documents the past of our region in various spheres of its social, political and economic life; in addition to various documents (sale-purchase contracts, certificates, ID cards, guild diplomas), the department collects numismatic items, medals and insignia, maps, plans and photographs; • ethnographic department – collects items documenting the everyday life of people living in our region, mainly items used in domestic and farming work (ploughs, harrows, troughs), flax and wool processing, as well as local folk costumes. In addition, the department collects works of folk artists; • nature department – collects items documenting the life of fauna and flora in the region – these are mainly prepared specimens of plants and animals; the department also has a rich collection of rocks and minerals occurring in the south of Poland; • archeological department – its core is a deposit from the Archeological and Ethnographic Museum from a Lusatian culture burial ground found In Praszka; • arts department – collects works of art of today and the past; • technological department. One of the basic forms of the museum’s activity is the organisation of exhibitions. There are currently 8 permanent exhibitions at the Praszka Museum: 1. “Prof. Konrad Ja?d?ewski“ 2. “Pharmacies in the past” 3. “The natural world near Praszka” 4. “Pre-historical Praszka” 5. “Praszka in historical documents” 6. “Praszka in the Silesian plebiscite and 3rd Silesian Uprising” 7. “Folk culture in the Praszka region” 8. “Industry in Praszka: past and present” In addition, the Museum organises temporary exhibitions.
