Midsummer Night – St. John’s Night (Noc ?wi?toja?ska)
Bia?a Nyska
“Midsummer Night” (St. John’s Night) is an event related to an ancient folk custom – the Night of Sobótka.
The Midsummer Night is an ancient folk custom. Our ancestors believed in magical properties of this ritual. It was supposed to guarantee good crops and health for participants in the celebration. The ritual also involved a custom of throwing garlands of herbs and flowers into the water by young girls and burning bonfires around which people were dancing and singing. The Midsummer Night is organised for the benefit of the Society for Development of Bia?a Nyska village. The event is aimed at promoting and cultivating Polish folk traditions and engaging inhabitants of the village in joint activities for promotion of the village. Through the event, organisers also encourage children, young people and adults to undertake active and cultural forms of leisure. The event offers artistic performances of children and the youth from Bia?a Nyska. Enthusiasts of football may enjoy the Village Football Tournament. It is an event of a district range. It is co-organised by the neighbouring villages, as well as by inhabitants of Czech partner village RejvizIt also provides for numerous elements related to traditions and customs of the Night of Sobótka, i.e.: a contest for the most beautiful garland, a contest for a poem about The Midsummer Night, the “Fern Flower” art competition. At midnight, a search for the fern flower is announced. At twilight, at the bank of river Bia?a G?ucho?aska, girls throw garlands into the water, and a fireworks show starts. At midnight participants form a moon-shaped ring by the fire and sing folk songs together.
