Lesisko Reserve

designation:

St. Anna Mountain

short description:

The Lesisko Reserve is located in the St. Anna Mountain Landscape Park on the southern slope of the Che?m Ridge.

detailed description:

The forest reserve (forests constitute 46,22 ha) covers an area of 49,95 ha. Its goal is to protect and maintain old beech stands composed of fresh Sudeten beeches and acidic lowland beech stands with oaks and larches. The name of the reserve derives from a dark beech forest which the local inhabitants called Lesisko (a deep forest). Some of the beech specimens are recognised as tree monuments (about 20 trees, mainly beeches). Their average height is 30 metres. Specific microclimate in the area with its high humidity and good distribution of organic matter makes for lush plant life. Herbs are represented by a plethora of plant varieties, including protected ones such as the lesser periwinkle, common ivy, daphne mezereum, Aruncus sylvestris, bastard balm, white helleborine, lily of the valley, woodruff, and the European wild ginger. Local fauna is equally rich. There are over 50 species of birds (including the common buzzard, hawk, and different woodpecker species) and numerous mammal ones (deer, roe deer, boars, foxes, squirrels, and martens). Near the reserve there is an old farm called Le?nik or Waldhof (today in ruins). The place is not far from the St. Teresa Chapel of Baby Jesus constructed, according to a legend, by Leopold von Gaschin. The chapel was renovated by a group of parishioners from ?yrowa, and it was opened in 2004. More importantly, it is very close to St. Anna Mountain, a pilgrimage centre for the inhabitants of Upper Silesia.
