Leading the Bear – a custom of the end of the carnival season (late February) in anticipation of Lent.
The village inhabitants are dressed in funny costumes of bride and groom, Gypsy, Death, priest, stork, as well as costumes representing all professions such as the chimney sweeper, butcher, doctor, policeman etc. They go through the village singing in joy to the loud music played by the accompanying band. At the head of the procession is a person leading a Bear from one house to another. Each of the housewives must dance with the Bear and hand over gifts to the party. Later, everyone gathers in the room where dancing and singing is followed with the ritual burying of the Bear. The Bear lies down in a coffin marking the end of carnival and joyful parties. However, to ensure that joy is back next year, the old Bear leaves its Cub which will mature in a year’s time to be led around the village.
