Kamionka

designation:

Chrz?stowice- Falmirowice Municipality,

short description:

In the forests between Falmirowice and Suchy Bór, in the place where the Kamionki quarry was located in the 19th century, there used to be a castle. It fell into ruin after the Swedish army marched across the land of D?bie

detailed description:

Near the castle there was a basalt hill from which breakstone was extracted for railway sleepers, new roads and construction sites. What is left of the hill today is a small spring lake, the Falmirowickie Kamionki. A long time ago, in a half mythical era this was the location of a castle belonging to Gerko, a local master whose property included D?bie. It was destroyed by the Swedish troops marching across the region during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). The castle has never been rebuilt since that time and gave way to a huge basalt mine supplying the road construction sites during the economic boom of the Frederic the Great era. Later, all economic activity in the area was stopped and the abandoned excavation site became a beautiful enclave of wild nature which eventually took over the spot. Today, Kamionka is the only place in the Opolskie province where one can see a unique mushroom in Poland, the Ramaria Botrytis as well as the increasingly rare daphne mezereum, pennywort, lily of the valley, and the buckthorn. What can bring joy to the eyes and ears of nature enthusiasts are the local birds – the kingfisher, the tawny owl, and the nightingale. Each year, on the second Sunday of February, the place becomes a venue for mountain bike races.
