Zdzieszowice
A unique Opolskie enclave of a riparian forest changing into a broadleaved one.
Tree stands are made up of impressive ashes and alders as well as occasional pedunculate oaks, hornbeams and sycamores. The understory is very well developed and mainly consists of bird cherries, rowans, and protected buckthorns. Strictly protected plants are represented by alpine squills, Equisetum maximum, and snowdrops. The forest has one of the highest indicators of biological production, species diversity, and population. It constitutes vital “life corridors” connecting areas of high natural value located all over the country. The riparian areas are nesting grounds for over 100 species of birds, the most interesting of which are little bitterns, bluethroats, grey herons, white-tailed eagles, ospreys, red kites, green woodpeckers, European rollers, hoopoes, swifts, cranes, lesser spotted eagles, short-toed eagles, booted eagles, and others. This outstanding representation of species is a result of a very complex spatial character of the tree stories in riparian forests which makes for a diversity of ecological niches.
