Uszyce is a fast developing village the inhabitants of which appreciate its values. This is no surprise, because Uszyce is the birthplace of Emanuel Kania – the first Chopin scholar in the Opole region. He was born on 26 March 1827. His parents were Urban and Joanna, née Krith. His father, a teacher at the local school, served at the same time as the church organist. Initially, Kania went to the elementary school in Uszyce and received his first music and piano lessons from his father. The young Emanuel then went to a secondary school in Wroc?aw where he also continued his music lessons under D. Schnabel. He travelled to various countries, finished his university music studies and then settled in Warsaw. In order to expand his musical knowledge he twice left Warsaw for Paris, but each time he returned to the capital (Warsaw) of Poland – a state that did not exist on the map of Europe at the time. Kania developed as an artist in four directions: as a teacher, virtuoso, composer and reviewer. He became famous first of all as a composer, especially of piano miniatures and stylised concert dances, and as an author of several concert transcriptions. Emanuel Kania’s legacy, his manuscripts and prints were given by his family to the Jagiellonian Library. It is desirable in very respect that young people in Gorzów in particular remember the work of Emanuel Kania as a golden link in our artistic evolution. This 19th century well-known composer, teacher and critic is the patron of the Town and Municipal Culture Centre in Gorzów ?l?ski. Perhaps this is why the local community is so active in the cultural life of the municipality, establishing all kinds of societies as well as music and dance groups. At the moment Emanuel Kania’s house is in private hands and is well kept by the owners who remember that this is where the first Chopinist of the Opole region came from.
