The Central Museum of Prisoners of War in ?ambinowice-Opole is an institution unique on a European scale dealing with the POW-related issues and some matters concerning recent Polish history. The museum undertakes scientific research, documentary, educational, exhibition, publishing, conservation and commemoration activity. The institution was founded in 1964 as an external section of the Opole Silesia District Museum. In 1965, it became an independent institution – the Museum of the Martyrology of Prisoners of War in ?ambinowice, subordinate to the Minister of Culture and Arts. In 1973, it was renamed for the Museum of the Martyrology and Fight of Prisoners of War in ?ambinowice. Since 1984 the institution has existed as the Central Museum of Prisoners of War in ?ambinowice-Opole, and since 1999 it has been subordinated to the local self-government of the Opolskie Province. The Museum has two seats: in ?ambinowice and Opole, which are around 40 km distant from each other. In ?ambinowice, there are the Collections and Conservation sections and the Education and Exhibitions section. Ever since the museum was founded, its seat is located in what remained from the former buildings of the German training ground (former commandant’s office of Wehrmacht and the guardroom). They were erected in the 1930s. After the war they were modernised several times (in years: 1964, 1989–1993, 2003–2004). In both the buildings, as well in the reconstructed barrack of Stalag 318/VIII F/344 Lamsdorf, there is a permanent exhibition, but temporary exhibitions are presented too. The museum in ?ambinowice is located in the area of the Place of National Remembrance
