Bory Niemodli?skie
Niemodli?skie Woods are a dense forest complex - the second largest in the Opolskie Region – with an area of 48,189 ha, including: 26,184 ha of forests, ponds with the total area of 1,062 ha, 5 forest reserves and 14,750 ha of arable land. The complex is located in a varied area, with a clearly marked edge of the Niemodli?ska Plain rising up towards the South-East. Additionally, the natural assets of the site are enhanced by the diversified – in terms of the habitats – forests, bogs and the vicinity of five lakes (among others Ksi???cy and Sangów – located in the area of the Niemodlin Municipality). For qualified tourists, the combination of these elements represents an attraction of at least regional, if not national, significance (water and marsh bird sanctuaries). The Niemodli?skie Woods Protected Landscape Area was established on 26 May 1988. Now, it covers an area of approx. 480 km² of the most valuable, in terms of natural assets, forest, which constitutes remains of the former Silesian Primeval Forest, with fragments of mixed and deciduous forests typical of the Polish. The long, interdisciplinary field research, carried out by biologists from the Opole University, resulted in listing of 19 species of protected plants within the territory of the Niemodli?skie Woods Protected Landscape Area, including 7 partially protected and 12 strictly protected (some of them have been qualified for the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in Poland. Two species are protected under the “Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats”). Due to the environmental conditions, it is the avifauna which is particularly diversified in terms of the number of species. So far in the area of the Niemodli?skie Woods Protected Landscape Area 150 breeding species have been recorded, which accounts for around 34% of Poland’s entire ornithology (ca. 438 species as per the Polish Zoological Association – PTZ). Many of these species are listed in all kinds of red lists of endangered species – regional, national and European ones.
