Basalt quarries
Kamiennik Municipality, Village of Wilamowice
The site comprises two inactive neighbouring basalt quarries
The Wilemowice basalts were formed 35 million years ago – this is the first, inaccurate date concerning the village. The quarries were closed so long ago that high trees have had time to overgrow them. In the Wilemowice forests there is an interesting place - it is the passage between basalt rocks, leading to a beautiful glade. The locals know this glade very well – for ages children have gone there for school trips. The area surrounding the quarry is very attractive in terms of the lie of land, being a reflection of the shape of the ceiling of basalts lying next to the surface. The basalts of Wilamowice form blocks lying close to each other, representing the remains of the extensive field cover and fragments of a lava stream.
