Basalt mine in Gracze

Detailed description:

The “Gracze” Basalt Mine is one of the oldest mines of its type in Poland. Its history dates back to the 16th century. Output on a larger scale began around 1850, and its development was accelerated when the railway line from Szyd?ów to Lipowa ?l?ska was built at the end of the 19th century. Mechanisation of the mine started in 1927, and the production of basalt aggregates (breakstones, key aggregates) commenced in 1929. In 1939 the production of grits started, which has so far been the core activity of the mine. After World War II, in May 1946, the mine resumed its production as a state-owned company and operated as such until the privatisation in 1997, when on April 1 it became a limited liability company, with 100% of the shares owned by the employees. The geographical location of the mine and the very high quality of the rock make it particularly attractive to customers from central and South-Eastern Poland due to the fact that the “Gracze” Mine is one of the two easternmost basalt deposits. The mine is located close to state road Opole-Niemodlin-Brzeg-Grodków and it has its own railway siding (part of the Gracze-Szyd?ów-Opole railway line). Furthermore, close to the mine, at a distance of around 4 km, there is the A-4 motorway.
