”Along the edge of the former primeval forest”- educational path
Wierzbie, ?ambinowice Municipality
Walking and cycling path, 11.5 km long. Difficulty level: easy. It follows the edge of the Niemodli?skie Woods and passes the biggest transitional moor of the Opolskie Region as well as the biggest spruce-tree in the province.
The path begins in the village of Wierzbie, in the vicinity of the Triumph of the Holy Cross Church, now the biggest church in the Skoroszyce deanery. What is worth visiting here is the chapel and the lapidarium, containing German tombstones of the turn of the 20th century, as well as the remains of the stoneworks of the already non-existent estate in Wierzbie and the church in the former village of Klucznik (now ?ambinowice training ground). From here, we follow the remains of the 200 year-old linden alley towards Ku?nica Ligocka (forest road). We pass the biggest spruce-tree in the Opolskie Province – Spruce Aleksander of 400 cm in girth. A bit earlier, there is “Small Brado” and “Forest of Youths” (Las M?odych). We reach province road No. 405 Niemodlin-Korfantow, which we cross and we head for the Ku?nica forester’s lodge. On the way there, on the right-hand side, we pass by a colony of over 25 anthills and meadows of the Kie?cznica Stream and an old, dead specimen of a relic tree – an oak of the former Niemodli?ska Primeval Forest. After around 20 minutes, we reach “Topiel” moor, once called “Kwiczalnia”. It is the biggest transitional moor in the Opolskie Province; it provides an opportunity to watch birds: cranes, fly-catchers, black storks. We pass by the moor and we head for Sowin (sandy forest track), to postglacial hills. We stop next to an erratic stone. It is worth knowing that Sowin is presently a complex of probably the richest archaeological sites of the Palaeolithic age. It was here that complete flint processing workshops were discovered.
