A well in Kamionek

designation:

Kamionek, Plac Stawowy

short description:

Among all the monuments in Kamionek, the oldest one is a well located in the centre of the village on a pond. It was renovated under the Operational Programme for Rural Development.

Detailed description:

The well was used by the inhabitants as a source of potable water. There is also a legend connected with it. During the Tartar invasion of the 12th century, people from Kamionek did not want the enemy to stay in their village. To this end, they covered the well with a huge limestone boulder and told the Tartars that water can be drawn only from the far Oder river. This infuriated the invaders who took revenge on the local community killing all of the inhabitants and burning their houses. When new settlers arrived in the village, they did not know about the existence of the old well. One hot summer there was no more water in the local pond. People had to fetch it from Kamie? and go as far as the Oder to secure water for their animals. Despairing, the inhabitants sought advice with the Franciscan order on St. Anna Mountain. The monks told them to go on a pilgrimage to beg for water at the miraculous, grace bestowing well and pilgrim church of Our Lady in Ujazd. On the day when some of the inhabitants set off on the pilgrimage, others were clearing the pond of dried silt. They persuaded a chimney sweeper who was passing by to help them. When he struck the silt with his axe for the first time, they all could hear a hollow thud. Everyone started digging and soon found a huge boulder. When removed, it disclosed a cased well with its life giving water. There was no end to joy. Ever since, on July 2 each year, inhabitants of Kamionek go on a thanksgiving pilgrimage to Studzionka near Ujazd.
