short text:

In the utmost southwest of Carinthia, the Lesachtal - that received an official award for being Europe’s most untouched valley - we would like to take you on a walk through a wild and romantic river landscape. Use this “take-it-easy day” to focus on your sense of hearing and listen to the natural sounds of forest and water surrounding the River Gail. You had better get going first thing after breakfast and take a snack and a picnic blanket with you in your rucksack. After all, at this time of day, nature shows itself from its liveliest side. Within an hour’s walk you’ll reach the riverbed of the Gail.

detailed description:

CROSS-COUNTRY.
Setting out from our holiday farm, you first walk along a grassy field path for about five minutes in eastern direction. The morning sun will shine in your face and you’ll be amazed how strong it already is. Carry on across the field for a while, just above two maple trees, one of which has a raised hide, and then diagonally down until you reach a tree with a red “X” where you dip into the coolness of the forest. Now stop for a while and listen to the birdsong – notice that their concert for several voices is being performed for you alone! A woodpecker might be hammering away on the bark of a tree, too.
Now take some deep breaths of the cool and spicy forest air and continue along until reach a gravel forest path. Follow this path for about 5 minutes until you reach a sharp left bend. This is where you will already be able to hear the roaring of the wild mountain stream coming from the depth of the Gail gorge.

A FEAST FOR THE EYES. The path continues in the direction of the valley and after around 10 minutes you will reach a wooden hut where you turn right and follow the access road to Wodmaier in the direction of the valley. For our little village, this road is both a lifeline and our connection to the world. You will pass some lovingly stacked piles of firewood and, after a few minutes walk, a huge common beech on the right-hand side. Imagine how many hundreds of years this tree has been standing here.
After about 20 minutes, you will arrive at a wooden bridge from which you follow the wide gravel road on the right down to the River Gail. You will now face a many-faceted world of water and rocks, with little side streamlets, sandbanks, and a couple of wonderful stone blocks, surrounded by bushes. Follow the gravel path leading southward and after about 5 minutes – shortly after you have crossed a little stream – you will have arrived at your destination. Can you see the two big boulders on the left, next to the path? One of them has a flattened surface, which makes it a perfect place for resting. For your orientation, on the right side of the boulders you will see two pink marks on a small tree and on a rock.

A FEAST FOR THE EARS. You can now unpack your blanket and make yourself comfy on this big boulder. Close your eyes and first of all focus on your sense of hearing in this fascinating landscape. What subtle sounds can you distinguish? Enjoy this as long as you like. You can also explore the area. Can you see the little tadpoles in one of the many little pools – or perhaps the water striders or any other tiny creatures? You had better avoid the strong current of the main river, though.
Now sit down again on the boulder and enjoy the lunch you brought with you - the fresh air will have made you hungry by now. Stay as long as you like.

To return, take the same way you came by.

We also recommend this hike to families with children!
The riverside looks different every time you come here. The little side streamlets with all the sand, pebbles and the endless supply of water make a fantastic, creative playground for children, so don’t forget to take wellington boots with you and sand box toys!
