In Lower Carinthia, only 20 km away from the provincial capital Klagenfurt, you will find the Trixnerbach, a natural stream with pretty little waterfalls, brown trout and crayfish and it is very near to Tscharnighof, our farm. Visitors are rewarded with a whole ecological microcosm of diversity to perceive with all of their senses. We would like to introduce you to this stream, so take a small snack with you in your rucksack along with some water, sun lotion, some bast for making something yourself and perhaps a brailer (spoon net) to catch fish with. The best time of day would be the afternoon.
WATER GAMES. Setting out from our farm, you walk for about ten minutes to the Sankt Margarethen bicycle trail that runs alongside the natural Trixnerbach stream. The best way to get into the streambed is by the second little bridge. Let the fine warm sand by the waterside trickle through your fingers. Take a few very deep breaths of the cool, fresh air and, if the weather’s warm, take off your shoes. To begin with, the water will seem rather cold to you, but you’ll soon get used to the pleasant freshness. You won’t be able to make fast progress here, there are so many rounded river stones and small banks of pebbles alternating with the pleasant loamy sand. With every step you take try and focus on what the soles of your feet are feeling and touch the differently shaped pebbles with your hands.
If you like, you can build a small obstacle in the stream. Use your hands to pile up some sand or place a few twigs on top of each other and watch what happens. Observe this quietly flowing brook with its little currents forming on the water surface. Can you see any fish or any other creatures living in the stream? Listen to the quiet gurgling of the water: The longer you focus on it, the more the murmuring and gurgling will sound to you like music.
CREATIVE BREAK. Now get hold of some loam and squash it through your fingers. What you have here is great natural modelling clay, so why not try to express yourself by making something. When you have finished, give it back to the stream.
You could also make some leafy snakes and let them float in the water. Just pick a few leaves from the riverbank, make little holes in them and join them together by using the bast you brought with you. Put your leaf snake into the water and see how far you can follow it with your eyes without running after it.
CATCH A TROUT. If you like, look for a place by the stream to have your picnic. But first of all, close your eyes for a few minutes and listen to the different birds chirping. Attentive people will see a variety of creatures and might spot butterflies and dragonflies fluttering around the stream. If you really manage to catch a trout with the brailer you have brought with you, you are welcome to cook it on our barbeque in the evening.
The same route will take you back to our farm.
