Why not treat yourself to a break of a few hours! In the utmost southwest of Carinthia, we would like to take you on a walk to the “green lungs” - the Lesachtal - that received an official award for being Europe’s most untouched valley. For this four-hour slow-down hike remember to pack a snack and a drink in your rucksack. Don’t forget to take sun lotion too and put on your hiking boots.
SOUNDSCAPE. A ten-minutes walk from our holiday farm will take you to the edge of the forest where you’ll instantly be surrounded by the fragrant forest air. The moment you enter the forest, fill both of your lungs with the oxygen-rich air before dipping into the dark green blanket of trees. Continue along the forest path and then follow the signposts indicating the way to the “Hubertuskapelle”.
Whenever you hear any unusual sounds, feel free to stop for as long as you like to find out what is causing the rustling or tapping noises: Could it be a deer bounding gracefully across the uneven forest floor?
Or could it be a squirrel high on a treetop, eating the tasty morsels it has just discovered? Perhaps a spotted woodpecker is tapping on the bark of a tree, trying to get hold of something eatable.
BREATHING TIME. So that your body can recharge its batteries, I recommend trying out a special breathing exercise which you can do while you walk. Stride along leisurely and suck the air right into the tips of your lungs while taking four steps. For another four steps hold your breath and during the next four steps breathe out the used air again. During the next four steps, pause with breathing and then the breathing cycle can start all over again. Repeat this cycle several times and you will soon feel much better and invigorated.
QUIET CONTEMPLATION. After another half an hour, you will pass a place where the game animals are fed on the left-hand side just off the forest path. Then you’ll pass a gravel pit, and after another 20 minutes you must follow the signpost “Hubertuskapelle – ½ Stunde”. For getting there, take the path on the right that crosses the Wolayerbach stream. After about 50 metres turn left again and continue along the forest path to the Wolayertal valley. All of a sudden you’ll be facing an impressive structure perched on a rock: the Hubertuskapelle (Hubertus chapel), built in 1916 to honour Saint Hubertus (the patron saint of huntsmen). Enter the chapel and afterwards settle down on the upper bench on the opposite side. You will be surrounded by fabulous mountain scenery, and if you have chosen the morning for your walk, the sun will be shining on your face. Enjoy the tranquillity of this romantic spot and, if you like, you can top up your energy by having your lunch.
For your way back, we recommend taking the path on the far side of the Wolayerbach stream. To get there, walk into the valley and cross the first little wooden bridge over the streambed (sometimes the bed is dried out). After a walk of 1½ hours you will reach the hamlet of Wodmaier and our farm.
