Detailed description:

Near the village there is a low hill called “Szwedzka Górka ("Swedish Hill"). Formerly it was covered with a dense forest after which today there are only single old limes. As the tradition has it, the name of the hill - "Swedish Hill" – is related to the Swedish army which during the Thirty Years’ War stopped around here when they marched from Opole to Nysa. The hill seemed to be a particularly suitable place for a stopover – it has a great view of nearby villages with soaring towers of churches and of a range of mountains stretching on the horizon from the west with emerging peaks of Biskupia Kopa and Srebrna Góra. Here Swedish soldiers organised shooting for entertainment and as a target they used a picture of the Mother of God. However, rebounds killed and injured some of the participants of the sacrilegious play. This aroused in soldiers a feeling of fear and anxiety, and even some respect for the “strange picture". A commander of the troop to overcome the feeling of fear and spontaneous respect among the soldiers for the picture which – in the Swedish eyes, Protestants – did not have any cult value, ordered 30 sharpshooters to destroy the picture with one shot from their guns. Again several soldiers were killed and injured. Then the commander ordered to take the picture to Nysa and as "magic" to burn it down in the public in the Square Market. During transport further unexpected occurrences happened. Near the village of Rynarcice horses stopped suddenly and although they were beaten they did not want to move. Then one of the soldiers took a bar and wanted to destroy the picture laying on the cart. Taking a swing he startled horses which shied suddenly and at a gallop hurt again several soldiers. Then they decided to resign from further transport of the picture. However, when horses with the cart were stopped and calm down, it turned out that the picture disappeared. Only after several days it was found in the former place near Przydro?e. It is difficult to say to what extent the second part of the story is true. Nevertheless, as a keepsake of these events, local people called the hill "Swedish Hill" and the “strange picture" was placed in a chapel specially built for that purpose. Soon pilgrims from the Prudnik, Nysa and Niemodlin regions, as well as from further regions began to come to visit it. On 9 October, 1741 in the castle in Przydro?e Ma?e an agreement was reached between Prussian king Frederick 2nd and a commander of the Austrian army, gen. Ripperg. In the chapel on the Swedish Hill there was still the picture of the Mother of God with year 1678 written on it worshipped by the local people. In 1894, the Scholz-Gerlich family which took care of it for many years initiated the construction of the brick stations of the Via Dolorosa and a number of small chapels presenting mysteries from the lives of Jesus Christ and of Mother of God. Extension of the church at the beginning of the 20th century was conducted by Rev. Emil Hauptstock and Rev. Walenty Wojciech – who later became the Wroc?aw bishop suffragan. Thousands of pilgrims attended every ceremony and sermons in Polish and German were given to them in the square in front of the church.
