Nowoku?nicki Pond Reserve
Nowa Ku?nia, Prószków Municipality
Nowoku?nicki Pond with an area of ca. 20 ha is a habitat of water caltrop (Trapa natans), a plant that is strictly protected in Poland. There are valuable species of birds, amphibians and reptiles.
The reserve was established with the purpose of preserving the water caltrop – a plant becoming extinct not only in the Opolskie Region. At the same time, the protection in the reserve covers the waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa - carnivorous, just as the sundew), Salvinia natans, nenufar, yellow water lily and an array of species of water and marsh birds. The reserve assets are increased by the wide belt of reed fields and boggy alder forests. In total, 135 bird species have been recorded in the area of the reserve, including the little bittern, black stork, penduline tit, kingfisher, grey heron, marsh harrier and great crested grebe.
