Town Hall in Strzelce Opolskie
Strzelce Opolskie
A historic seat of the municipal authorities in the centre of Strzelce Opolskie. Earliest records referring to the Town Hall can be found in the municipal property register from 1581.
The fact that such an important building existed in the centre of the market square in 18th century Strzelce was confirmed by J. J. Reichel, a chronicler of the town. In mid 18th century, on November 24 1754, there was a dangerous fire in the town which engulfed the Town Hall and its tower among other buildings. The seat of the municipal authorities was rebuilt as soon as in 1758. During the 17th and the 18th centuries, the Town Hall was close to a station for post coaches. Another fire, which raged in the town on July 21 1826, also destroyed part of the Hall; but it was the following one, on June 18 1827, which burnt it to the ground. The new Town Hall was built between 1844 and 1846 according to the design by Roch, a building engineer. The tower was erected on the old foundation and covered with a Classicist and Neo-Gothic dome. Total cost of the works amounted to 43,000 thalers. The building has two stories; its plan is rectangular. There are broad risalits on the sides of both elevations. On the front one, between the risalits, there is a Neo-Gothic portico. The back one has a tower which is partly built into the main body of the building. Its lower stories are square whereas the upper ones are octagonal and crowned with a Neo-Gothic frieze, a cornice, as well as a Classicist and Neo-Gothic dome with a double lantern.
