Historic cemetery in Pietnia

designation:

Pietna

short description:

If one where to identify a truly breathtaking place in Pietnia, it would have to be the cemetery which is located on a hill and visible from every part of the village.

Detailed description:

The layout of the graves is amazing; each is facing the village. We do not know when the first burials took place, but it is estimated that it was around mid 14th century when the area was ravaged the plague. Victims were buried in a common grave. According to other sources, the cemetery was established during the Swedish invasion. It is not clear how the hill on which people are buried today was created. A possible explanation might be that it was formed by a glacier. It is also possible that a long time ago, during the plague, the place had already been a burial mound. Today, the cemetery has a chapel which replaced an old wooden cross. Inside, there is an altar; above it – a cross and a painting of St. Jadwiga, patroness of Silesia and Pietnia. Mounted on the side walls are plaques commemorating the victims of the First and the Second World Wars as well as paintings. One is of Our Lady of Cz?stochowa; the other is by a painter from the St. Anna Mountain who, according to a legend, was inspired by a dream of a village beggar Alojz Kasperek. In 1968, the Lourdes Grotto was built in the eastern part of the cemetery and Stations of the Cross were hung on the cemetery trees. Moreover, when you visit the cemetery, you can also visit the village itself. The first charming thing about Pietnia is its landscape. It is located in a valley by the Osob?oga river. Behind its houses which are mostly in excellent condition, there are beautiful meadows and forests with very old tree stands. It is worth going there if only for a Sunday walk around charming spots. Visitors can see a fountain, a beautifully renovated chapel from the 19th century, and the statue of St. Florian. In the very centre of the village, there is a pond which can be reached by a wooden bridge.
