DOBRODZIE?
Evangelical cemetery
The first evangelical service was celebrated in Dobrodzie? in 1837. It took place in the church of St. Valentine. The celebrating priest was Peter Schickora, a pastor from Grodziec. This does not mean that there were no Protestants in Dobrodzie? before that date. That is not true. Lots of them came there attracted by exemptions and reliefs granted by the ever stronger Prussian state which was desperate for specialists who would be able to smelt iron necessary for the development of the industry and the expanding army. Local Evangelicals were supported by the nobility of the region who were often favourably inclined towards reformist ideas. The situation was similar in Dobrodzie?. The building of a Protestant church was financially supported by, among others, Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig, the then owner of the town. Support was also offered by the town public servants and the administration including the Duke’s police superintendent Karl Johann Langer who, in 1867, presented the evangelicals with a painting of Martin Luther. This gift was to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the day on which this monk of the Augustinian order nailed his theses on the door of the Wittenberg church calling on theologians to enter into a public debate on the rationale and efficacy of giving indulgencies. The event marks the beginning of Church Reformation.
