A Gothic castle. Situated on a small hill, initially surrounded by a moat levelled in the 19th century. Brick-built on a high fieldstone underpinning. Built on an irregular polygonal plan with three wings incorporated into the wall perimeter. From the courtyard, the oldest, north wing has a rectangular break in which the castle chapel was located on the first floor. Between 1533 and 1569 the castle was rebuilt and expanded; the new structures included the entrance gate with a bulwark and bridge, and outbuildings. In 1660 a jail was created in the gate building. In 1703 the castle was purchased by the Teutonic Order. In 1741 its was damaged when the town was shelled by the Prussian army, and was subsequently rebuilt. In 1771 the south wind was added incorporating the external defensive wall. After the secularisation of the order in 1810, the outbuildings were demolished. In 1830 the castle passed to private hands. In 1895, following the purchase of the castle by the owner of the Haselbach brewery, its interior was significantly transformed.
